One of the most common questions we get from patients requesting a medicine not available in their country is: What does it cost, and how is the price determined? To help you understand, we’ve created this clear guide. It explains what’s included in the total cost of importing a medicine through Everyone.org, so you can make an informed decision.

What’s included in the medicine import price?

When you request a medicine from Everyone.org, you’ll receive a detailed quote. This quote contains all elements of importing a medicine into your country via Everyone.org. More specifically, they are:

  • The price of the medicine;
  • Our Global Access Assistance Fee;
  • Shipping costs;
  • Import taxes (where applicable).

Let’s break each of these elements down.

#1: The price of the medicine

The base price of each medicine is set by the manufacturer and often varies depending on where the medicine is approved.

Many medicines receive initial approval in the U.S., where prices can be up to 3x higher than in other countries due to regulatory and market factors. Until another country approves the medicines, they will only be available at the US market price. That’s just one more problem caused by delays in medicine approval processes worldwide.

Whenever possible, we source the medicine from markets with lower costs. However, we only work with thoroughly vetted suppliers to guarantee quality—quality and authenticity are never compromised for price.

To keep our services running and help more patients, we add a small markup to the lowest available price. All profits are reinvested into fulfilling our mission of supporting patients worldwide.

While we constantly update prices on our website, please note that they can vary due to availability with our suppliers at the time of the order.

#2: Our Global Access Assistance fee

For each order, we apply a Global Access Assistance fee. This fee covers our expenses related to medicine sourcing, logistics planning and follow-up, making sure we can offer you the highest standard of service from beginning to delivery.

The fee is tiered according to the price of the medicine:

Medicine price Global Access Assistance Fee

 €1 - €1,499

 € 73.75

 €1,500 - €3,999

 €147.50

 €4,000 - €7,499

 €295

 €7,500 - €12,499

 €395

 €12,500 - €44,999

 €495

 €45,000+

 €900

#3: Shipping costs

Once the medicine is sourced, our team arranges shipping with trusted logistics partners. This ensures the appropriate shipping conditions for each medicine - like maintaining a “cold chain” for temperature-controlled medicines - are met.

Shipping fees include:

  • Transportation from the supplier to our partner pharmacy;
  • Delivery to your country of residence;
  • Export/import documentation preparation.

The final price we provide includes all shipping-related costs.

#4: Import taxes (where applicable)

Import taxes might apply for shipping medicines to the destination country. Import taxes normally consist of import VAT and a fee that customs may charge.

Since these are different per country (in some countries, the import taxes might even be exempt for pharmaceuticals) and per customs office, we often cannot calculate them in advance. They are not included in our quote.

You can contact your local customs office to find out if import taxes apply and how they can be paid.

VAT refund (for order pick-ups)

If you’re not an EU citizen and you’re picking up your medicine from one of our partner pharmacies in Europe, you may be eligible for a VAT refund.

We can help you to get a VAT refund if you meet the following conditions:

  • Your permanent residence is outside the European Union;
  • You take the medicines with you, unused, within 90 days after purchase;
  • You have a full original invoice stamped by the tax free office at the airport. We’ll provide you with the invoice, but you need to take it to customs at the airport for a stamp.

Check out the full overview of our VAT refund procedure.

Paying for your medicines

We understand that accessing life-saving medicines can be a significant financial burden. Here are some resources that might help:

 Health Insurance

In some cases, health insurance companies may partially or fully cover the cost of the medicine. We recommend contacting your provider and submitting a detailed request that includes:

  • Your intention to import a medicine from abroad that is unavailable in your country.
  • Proof of the lack of reasonable treatment alternatives available in your country (if you can, include a letter from a doctor confirming this).
  • Proof that the medicine has already been approved in another country.
  • Proof that your treating doctor considers this medicine the best option for you (include a copy of the prescription in your letter to the healthcare insurance company).

Government Assistance Funds

Some countries offer financial support for accessing treatment abroad. Check with your health ministry or local patient organizations for advice.

Crowdfunding

The Everyone.org Foundation

We understand the frustration of novel medicines’ prices, and we’re doing what we can to limit the financial burden it creates on patients. That’s why we created the Everyone.org Foundation

The foundation raises awareness and funds for the financial assistance of the most vulnerable patients globally. The foundation is still in early stages, but you can check with our Patient Support team whether funds are available for your medicine.

And if you are able to contribute to the foundation, all donations are welcome and will be used directly towards supporting patients’ treatment costs.
